VOICE AND
VIDEO OVER IP
(2 Days)
SEMINAR
DESCRIPTION
Voice over IP (VoIP)
is a testimony to the ability of IP to carry a wide variety of application
traffic. Although initially a
novelty, voice and video over IP is now being taken seriously as the next major
application to populate the Internet. But
unlike most other Internet applications VoIP requires real time delivery
capabilities from a network architecture that is based on best effort service
only. Because of this, forecasters
are divided on how widely VoIP will be used on the Internet and whether the
Internet can indeed be modified to make it a threat to the circuit switched
world. This course will examine, in
detail, the benefits and drawbacks of this new and potentially “killer app”
and how to approach the deployment of VoIP within your organization.
How
You and Your Organization Will Benefit
In
December 1997 global IP telephony traffic reached 6.3 million minutes per month
and is expected to grow to 8.7
billion minutes per month by December 2002, changing the face of the
telecommunications industry.
Few organizations can now ignore VoIP, its cost saving potential or new
opportunities that it offers; however it is not without problems. There is
considerable uncertainty surrounding regulations and standards,
interoperability, network bandwidth allocation and quality of service. This
course will address these problems and the technical issues associated with
introductory and large scale deployment of VoIP.
